Friday’s Girls Basketball: Pe Ell Picks up Road Win

By The Chronicle

SOUTH BEND — Annika Mason scored a game-high 17 points and the Trojans broke a four-game losing skid in a 40-31 Pacific 2B League road win over the Indians on Friday.

Pe Ell (8-10, 8-8) shot just 25 percent from the field but was able to limit South Bend to an even worse 17 percent to pull off the victory at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

“Our man-to-man defense worked well,” Pe Ell coach Randy Driver said. “Second quarter we changed defense and we shouldn’t have.”

Freshman Charlie Carper had another big game for the Trojans, grabbing a game-high 13 boards while scoring eight points. South Bend (6-12, 6-10) was led by sophomore Reece Williams’ nine points. The Trojans won the rebounding battle 45-38.

Driver credited Carper and Mason for their play. “They both come through just about every time,” Driver said.”

The win keeps the Trojans in fifth place in the Pacific 2B and the Indians in sixth. Next up for Pe Ell is at North Beach on Monday.

Rambo, Sackrider Sink Tenino

ELMA — Jalyn Sackrider and Kali Rambo combined for 32 points, 16 each, and Elma routed Tenino 57-31 in 1A Evergreen play on Friday.

It’s the third loss in the last four games for Tenino (7-10, 2-4), which had to answer for the Sackrider-Rambo offensive onslaught. Sophomore forward Ashley Schow had a team-high 10 points for the Beavers.

Tenino shot 35 percent from the field compared to 41 percent for the Eagles. The Beavers trailed by just four points at the half but couldn’t keep momentum in their favor.

“We were with them until the third quarter,” Tenino coach Scott Ashmore said. “They hit shots in the fourth quarter and we made bad decisions. They got more shots off and it made a difference.

Ashmore gave praise to sophomore guard Megan Letts, who was able to make a difference without scoring a single point. She set the tone for the team with her rebounding and defense.

“We were doing a great job rebounding,” Ashmore said. “Best rebounding effort by us all season, no matter who we’ve played.”

Tenino hosts Hoquiam on Tuesday.
