Monday’s Girls Soccer: Winlock and Seton Catholic Each Score in Draw

VANCOUVER — Seton Catholic scored first but the Cardinals tied the game in the second half as the game ended in a 1-1 draw in a non-league girls soccer game here on Monday.

The Cougars scored at the end of the first half on a goal by Shannon Coffey for a 1-0 lead at intermission.

In the 65th minute, Alexa Barragan dribbled through the defense and took a lengthy shot that found its way to the back of the net to even the score.

Winlock goalkeeper Kiya Peppers made about seven saves in net.

“She’s understanding when to come out and she had a great game on the turf and she’ll keep getting better because she puts effort into it,” Winlock coach Brian Ziese said.

Ziese commended the play of Elizabeth Wolfe on defense and was happy his youthful squad gained some valuable experience.

“We played good. It was going back and forth. We don’t want to keep getting blown out, we want to build confidence,” Ziese said. “We had some girls that have played with me for a couple years. They’re only sophomores and still learning, half our team that has never played before. I’m glad we have some non-league games so we can get ready for league.”

Winlock (1-0-1) travels to Kalama on Wednesday for a non-league game.

Onalaska Takes Down Life Christian

TACOMA — The Loggers used a solid second half to cruise past Life Christian 5-1 in a non-league girls soccer game here on Monday.

Brooklyn Sandridge and Autumn Russ each scored two goals for Onalaska. The fifth goal was an own goal by the Eagles on a Russ shot that bounced off a Life Christian defender and into the goal.

“They played a lot better in the second half. They started a little slow but got going in the second half and played really good soccer,” Onalaska coach Chris VanClifford said.

Onalaska (3-0) travels to Napavine at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for a non-league game.
