Summer Softball: Rochester Pummels Rainier to Complete Undefeated Summer
By The Chronicle
OLYMPIA — Rochester completed an undefeated summer at Stevens Park here on Monday, earning a 26-6 win in three innings against a combo squad of Rainier, Yelm and River Ridge in a summer league softball game.
Eva Cracknell started in the circle for Rochester and pitched two innings, allowing four runs and four strikeouts. Kassidy Byrd pitched the third inning and allowed one earned run and struck out one batter.
At the plate, Cracknell was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and a walk and Byrd was 2-for-2 with two walks. Kaylei Clark was 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI and four runs and Jessa Lenzi was 2-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch.
Rochester had nine hits in the first inning and scored 10 runs to take a 10-4 lead after one inning. Rochester plated four runs in the second inning and put the game away for good with 12 runs in the third inning.
Rochester collected 18 hits against the combo squad.
“The ladies jumped out to a big lead early and their bats were incredibly hot. We had nine hits in the first inning alone and also took advantage of a few miscues by the other team,” Rochester coach Dave Montgomery said. “Eva (Cracknell) and Kaylei (Clark) hit the ball especially hard, getting a couple extra bases each. Our pitching wasn’t as sharp in this game but the big lead, and our solid defense, gave our pitchers some confidence to keep battling.”
Montgomery thanked his assistant coach Dani Wall.
“She (Wall) did an awesome job with the ladies. Also want to thank the players and parents for a fun summer season,” Montgomery said. “It was so cool to see them come together, from Rochester, Olympia, Capital, and Pope John Paul II, and make one team that played hard for each other and made great friends.”
Rochester earned the summer league title at 8-0 and outscored their opponents 100-22.
