Prep Girls Soccer: W.F. West Captures Battle on the Blacktop Title

TENINO — The Beavers played host to six teams throughout the weekend and were able to reach the championship game, but it was W.F. West with a 1-0 win against the Beavers that took the Battle on the Blacktop prep girls soccer tournament.

Cameron Sheets scored the only goal of the championship contest for the Bearcats.

“It was a hell of a battle,” Tenino Head Coach Kevin Schultz said.

The two teams will meet in the regular season Tuesday, Sept. 17, in Tenino.

In the semifinals on Sunday, W.F. West took down Toledo 8-0. Brianna Powe and Sheets each tallied two goals while Lexi Roberts, Abbey Duffey, Taya McCallum and Jocelyn Robertson scored one goal each.

In the other semifinal, Tenino took down fellow Evergreen 1A League rival Montesano, 4-0. Megan Letts, Molly Craig, Morgan Miner and Brieanna Dell each scored for the Beavers.

The tournament began on Saturday with group play. In the first game of the day, Toledo defeated Rochester 5-1. Maryssa Peters scored two goals and Marina Smith, Rose Dillon and Brie’s Gallegos each scored for the Indians. Megan Haury recorded the lone goal for the Warriors.

In the second game on Saturday, W.F. West blanked Montesano 3-0. Tizzie Zylstra, Powe and Sheets all scored for the Bearcats. Game 3 featured a 1-0 win for Tenino over Toledo, with Dell scoring the only goal of the game.

In Game 4, Montesano took down Hoquiam 3-2. In Game 5, Tenino crushed their Scatter Creek rivals 7-0. Sierra Pogue scored a hat trick, Miner tallied two goals and Cheyenne Rossow and Dell each scored a goal.

In the final game of the day, W.F. West earned a 3-0 win against Hoquiam. Kaylynne Dowling, Taylor Isom and Roberts found the back of the net for the Bearcats.

The prep girls soccer season will officially begin on Aug. 26 with the first day of practice and the first games slated for Saturday, Sept. 7. W.F. West kicks off the season on Tuesday, Sept. 10, against Centralia in the annual Rotary Cup game. Toledo travels to Rochester to open the season on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and Tenino hosts Napavine on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
