Thursday’s Prep Baseball: Tigers Finish Postponed Game With Win Over Aberdeen

By The Chronicle

ABERDEEN — Centralia and Aberdeen began a game on Tuesday at Wheeler Field and the game ended here on Thursday with the Tigers winning 3-1 in an Evergreen 2A Conference baseball game.

Jeremy Wood pitched the first six innings and allowed one run. Derek Beairsto pitched the seventh and earned the save. Beairsto hit a RBI double in the sixth inning as an insurance run.

“I was very proud of the way they attacked the strike zone. Only walked one which is good for us,” Centralia coach Rex Ashmore said. “Obviously, if you don’t walk people, you keep yourself in the game. They did a good job of throwing strikes and our defense for the most part was pretty solid.”

Colby Steele was 2-for-3 with a RBI and Jackson Hull was also 2-for-3 for the Tigers.

Centralia led 2-1 when the game was postponed on Tuesday at Wheeler Field and the Tigers added another run today in the bottom of the sixth to insure the win. Centralia and Aberdeen were scheduled to play another game, but were rained out following one inning to complete the postponed game.

“We started early which was probably a good thing because when we got to the top of the seventh, it started to rain pretty good. Aberdeen got the first two guys on but Beairsto got a couple ground balls and a fly ball,” Ashmore said. “Being wet like that, it could have gone either way. I’m proud of how they responded to that. It would have been nice to play more than one inning but if you have to do that, better to come home with a W.”

Centralia (8-4, 4-3) hosts W.F. West in the first Swamp Cup baseball game of the season at Wheeler Field on Friday.

Pitching Leads Beavers Past Eagles

ELMA — Tenino received solid pitching from Alex Bratton and Abe Nelson to earn a 5-2 win over Elma in a 1A Evergreen League baseball game here on Thursday.

Bratton, a senior, started on the mound and pitched five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out nine batters. Nelson, a freshman, came on in relief and pitched the final two innings to earn the save, allowing no hits.

Elma scored in the first inning for an early lead. The Beavers jumped into the lead with three runs in the third inning. Elma plated another run in the fourth, but Tenino added two insurance runs in the seventh.

“We took advantage of their mistakes. Nothing on the stat line that will pop out, did enough to get the win,” Tenino coach Ryan Schlesser said.

Tenino (4-8, 2-3) travels to Forks on Friday at 2 p.m. for a league doubleheader.
