By The Chronicle

W.F. West clinched the Evergreen 2A Conference wrestling title in Chehalis on Tuesday, earning wins over Black Hills and Tumwater in a double dual.

The Bearcats started the night against Black Hills and won 57-18 and followed that up with a 54-18 win over Tumwater.

W.F. West had several wrestlers win matches against Tumwater and Black Hills, including Isaac Reavis (195 pounds) with two wins by pin and Chris Powe (182) earning two wins by forfeit. Bo Davis (126), Mason Morones (138), Henry Robbins (106), Caden Cunningham (113) and Darren Gray (120) each earned two wins on the night.

Zach Evans (132) earned a win by pin against Tumwater and Carver Brennan (152) earned a win by pin over Black Hills. Evan Moon (160) earned a win by pin over Black HIlls and Bryson Boyd (220) won by forfeit against the Wolves. Chase Conway (285) pinned his Tumwater opponent.

W.F. West coach Jamie Rakevich was pleased with the performance of Conway against Black Hills’ Kade Elliott, a former state placer. Rakevich also noted the performance of Boyd, holding his own in a 3-1 loss to two-time state placer Kayden Hicks of Tumwater.

“I was really glad how we wrestled against Black Hills. There were a couple matches that could have gone either way and the guys competed really well,” Rakevich said. “Tumwater, we come out a little flat but overall, they did well. It was good to get a win on senior night.”

W.F. West is off until traveling to Centralia on Wednesday for the wrestling version of the Swamp Cup.

Bobcats Prevail Over Warriors

ABERDEEN — Rochester was down four wrestlers and it showed here on Wednesday against the Bobcats as Aberdeen won 46-27 in a wrestling dual.

Kade Lenzi (138 pounds) won by pin over Patrick Hunt and Kaleb Spann (160) Cody Binks by pin in 3:50.

Riley Cohron won by pin over Ashton Goings in 3:15.

Rochester coach Jason Dick noted the two matches of the night were by Nate Kilmer (195) and Tomas Ashton (285). Kilmer won in a close 14-12 decision over Joseph Bercier. Ashton defeated Enrique Ontiveros by pin in 4:56.

“Tomas and Nate, they stepped up. Ontiveros beat him (Ashton) twice last year,” Dick said. “He got a pin, he wore that guy out and pinned him in the third round.”

Dick noted the absences of Jakxen Wheery, Jayden Lancaster and Jeremy Brant, saying he hopes they can get healthy in time for a tournament this Saturday.

“Overall, they wrestled well. We throw out our second varsity and young guys and they did well,” Dick said.

Rochester will compete at three separate tournaments this Saturday. The varsity will be at the King of the Hill tournament in Tumwater hosted by Black Hills. The JV will participate in the Rubber Chicken Classic and the girls will participate in a tournament in Puyallup.

Saturday’s Results

Pirates Show Flashes of Dominance at Justin Norton Memorial

RAINIER — Adna was able to place four wrestlers here at the Justin Norton Memorial Tournament on Saturday during a non-league prep wrestling hootenanny.

Ashton Dowell was the only Pirate to claim gold as he bested the rest of the 170 pound class. Lucas Ashley and Matthew Slape managed to wind up second at 152 pounds and 160 pounds, respectively, and Tristan Ridley took fifth at 132 pounds.

“Lucas is wrestling down from 160 for the first time this year and he wrestled better than he has all season. Both Lucas and Matthew wrestled defending state champs in the finals. They both wrestled great matches, but both came up just short,” noted Adna coach Craig Ferrier. “Ashton also wrestled fairly we on his way to the championship.”

Adna will grapple with LIfe Christian in a league match on Thursday before heading to the Raymond Invitational on Saturday.
