Tuesday’s Girls Basketball: Rainier Edges Toledo in Overtime

By The Chronicle

TOLEDO — Kal Schaplow hit a shot with four seconds left to send the game to overtime, but it was Rainier that was able to earn a 58-54 win over Toledo in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

Kal Schaplow led the Indians with 22 points and eight rebounds. Stacie Spahr also had a big night for the Indians with 19 rebounds and 17 points. Kyleigh Holmes was also in double figures with 10 points.

Rainier’s Kaeley Schultz recorded 36 points and Sandra Miles added 11 points.

The Mountaineers shot 37 percent from the field while Toledo managed just 27 percent shooting, but the Indians crashed the boards, outrebounding Rainier 44-28.

Rainier led 10-5 after one quarter and maintained the advantage to lead 24-18 at halftime.

Toledo came out strong in the third quarter and was able to slowly climb back into the game, with Schaplow’s shot sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime frame, Schultz scored all 12 points for the Mountaineers and was able to hold off Toledo down the stretch.

“I think once we settled down after the first quarter, we played well,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “It’s good for our girls to be in that type of environment. These girls, they always play hard, and I’m proud of them for that. It was a loud, fun, playoff atmosphere. I’m proud of how they kept their composure and came back.”

Toledo (11-4, 4-1) hosts Adna on Thursday in a big C2BL game.

Adna Takes Down Winlock

ADNA — After a slow start for both teams, Adna scored 26 points in the second quarter and never looked back, defeating Winlock 58-27 in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

Faith Wellander recorded a double-double for Adna with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Payton Aselton led the Pirates with 13 points and Karlee VonMoos, an eighth grader, came off the bench and scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds, all in the second half.

Addison Hall led the Cardinals with 14 points and Karlie Jones tallied six points.

Adna’s pressure defense gave Winlock trouble all night, with the Cardinals only firing 28 shots while the Pirates put up 75 shots.

Winlock led 4-2 after one quarter, but the Pirates put 26 on the board in the second quarter to lead 28-14 at halftime. It was all Adna in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 30-13.

“Out pressure bothered them the whole time. We turned them over enough to make plays but there was a lid on it,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “When they did start to fall, we had 26 in the second, our best of the whole season. It wasn’t anything I could get mad about, it was just slowing down our offense and controlling the pace instead of taking quick shots.”

Adna (11-4, 4-1) heads to Toledo on Thursday for a C2BL game.

Loggers Prevail Over Tigers

NAPAVINE — Callie Lawrence scored 26 points to lead Onalaska to a 61-46 win over Napavine in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here on Tuesday.

Alex Cleveland-Barrera chipped in 12 points and Eryn Duryea added nine points for the Loggers.

Rae Sisson had a big game for the Tigers with 18 points and Sydney Purvis recorded 11 points.

Onalaska was finding their shot on Tuesday, shooting 55 percent from the field while the Tigers shot just 25 percent.

Onalaska started strong to lead 22-8 after one quarter. The Tigers responded in the second quarter and cut the lead to 29-25 at halftime.

Napavine tried to mount a comeback and cut the Onalaska lead to 46-43 entering the fourth quarter. It was all Loggers in the final frame, outscoring Napavine 15-3 to complete the win.

“I thought we worked extremely hard to come back in the first half to bring the score within one point with a minute left in the third quarter. Unfortunately after that, we made some costly mental errors tonight,” Napavine coach Shane Schutz said. “Onalaska was well prepared and did a great job of taking advantage of our mistakes. Their kids fought very hard for the win tonight, they did a great job.”

Schutz applauded the play of Sisson, noting she kept shooting after her shots weren’t falling early in the game.

Onalaska (9-6, 2-3) hosts Rainier on Thursday while Napavine (5-10, 2-3) hosts Wahkiakum on Thursday in a league contest.

Morton-White Pass Comes Up Short Against Toutle Lake

RANDLE — It was a back and forth affair between Toutle Lake and Morton-White Pass here on Tuesday with the Ducks prevailing 39-36 in a Central 2B League girls basketball game.

Hannah Smathers had her first career double-double, scoring a career-high 16 points while grabbing 14 rebounds. Jacie Dunlap chipped in 12 points for the T-Wolves.

Jordyn Grabenhorst led the Ducks with nine points and Casey Wentz added eight points.

Each team made 14 shots from inside the arc and one 3-pointer, but the Ducks made three more free throws, including two late shots from the charity stripe to put the game away.

“I really liked our effort and our energy. We played a whole lot harder than the last two or three games,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “We just came up a little bit short there in the last minute.”

MWP (1-13, 0-5) travels to Mossyrock on Thursday for a league contest.
