Saturday’s Girls Basketball: Pe Ell Cruises Over Life Christian

By The Chronicle

PE ELL — It was an attention to the small things, like rebounds and free throws, that propelled Pe Ell to a 45-36 victory over Life Christian here on Saturday in Pacific 2B girls basketball action.

While the game was tied at the intermission the home team went on a run in the second half for the final advantage. The Trojans grabbed 36 rebounds compared to the Eagles 26 boards on the night. Both teams shot 20 free throws, but Pe Ell connected on 13 while Life Christian hit only eight freebies.

Charlie Carper notched a double-double for Pe Ell. She hit 10 of 16 shots on her way to a game-high 20 points and snagged a team-high 13 rebounds.

Rachel Ward was the Trojans’ second leading scorer with eight points while Katie Davis added six points.

“Our bench play was key. Girls come off the bench and got a lot of good energy going for us,” said Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps. “Once we did get going, at the foul line we were much better. I’m just proud of the way we played. It was a great team effort with contributions from every player, and it’s always good to get a win.”

Pe Ell (3-11, 3-9 league) will play at Raymond on Thursday.

Battle Ground Defeats Mossyrock

MOSSYROCK — The 4A Tigers were too much for the 2B Vikings here on Saturday as Battle Ground earned a 49-36 win over Mossyrock in a non-league girls basketball game here on Saturday.

Andee Nelson scored a team-high 20 points and Heather Edgar added 12 points. Madison Vigre was the other Viking on the score sheet with four points.

“We played pretty well the first half. We struggled this game scoring offensively with only three people getting in the book. It makes it difficult,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said. “It was a big game for Nelson. It helped boost some confidence for us and helped Andee realize she can contribute. It was a lot closer, they started making free throws.”

Note: Chief Leschi defeated Mossyrock 45-34 on Monday in a non-league game in Puyallup. Mossyrock (5-8, 3-2) hosts Morton-White Pass on Thursday in a Central 2B League game.
