Friday’s Prep Softball: Rochester’s Bats Swing Warriors Past Capital

By The Chronicle
OLYMPIA — It hailed during a nonleague softball game in more ways than the weather here on Friday, as Rochester rained down 19 hits on Capital to earn a 26-6 win in five innings.
Lexi Trombley was 4 for 4 with two triples, a double and 8 RBI. Madison Bates was 3 for 4 with four RBI.
Bella Phelps was 3 for 4 with a double and two walks and younger sister Liz Phelps was 3 for 4 with a walk and 2 RBI’s in her first career varsity start.
The Warriors opened the first inning with 11 runs and never looked back.
“We just jumped out on top of them to begin with, I didn’t expect that,” Rochester coach Dave Montgomery said. “I coached them last year, I definitely didn’t expect it to be this much. We were on and they were off.”
On the mound, Rochester’s Delaney Glazer got the start and didn’t allow an earned run in 2 ⅓ innings of work. Hunter Hahn came on in relief and allowed just one earned run pitching the final 2 ⅔ innings.
Rochester led 11-1 after one inning and added six runs in the second inning and four more runs in the third inning for a 21-6 lead after three. Montgomery put his subs in after that and they were able to score five runs in the fifth inning to cap the victory.
“We even brought up the Tenino game, telling them we need to keep the foot on the gas and not let up. That’s what good teams do until they get the game over with a five inning win. We told them they couldn’t let up,” Montgomery said. “We were really strong in those first three innings and I was able to get some subs in. We had 5 runs in the fifth with mostly subs, that was really neat to get a bunch of people into the game.”
Rochester (3-1) begins Evergreen 2A Conference games on Monday, traveling to Tumwater to face the Thunderbirds.
