Thursday’s Girls Soccer: Bearcats Edge Bobcats in Shootout
By The Chronicle
ABERDEEN — Kiara Steen made the final shot in the shootout to lift the Bearcats to a 2-1 win over Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls soccer match here on Thursday.
Alida Ellingson scored for the Bearcats in the 58th minute, knocking into the net with her left foot for a 1-0 lead. Aberdeen tied the game up in the 71st minute on a set piece goal to eventually send the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, W.F. West goalkeeper Ryah Bezhenar made two saves. Tizzie Zylstra scored a shootout goal and Steen was the final shooter, burying the shot for the win.
“We played excellent, did a really good job of controlling midfield. We made some adjustments because we’ve given up too many goals defensively this year. It worked really well tonight,” W.F. West coach Allen Anderson said. “Ryah had a fantastic night, her best game of the year. I’m proud of her performance in the shootout. This will go a long way to building confidence, the saves she made were fantastic. If she doesn’t make those, we don’t have an opportunity to win that game.”
W.F West (2-6, 1-2 league) travels north on Tuesday to face Rochester in an EvCo match.
Tumwater Comes From Behind to Defeat Centralia
The Tigers scored early, but Tumwater tallied two second half goals to come from behind and top Centralia 2-1 in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls soccer game at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.
Alayna Miller scored in the 4th minute for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Tumwater tied the game in the 57th minute, and scored again in the 77th minute to earn the victory.
The Thunderbirds outshot the Tigers 11-4. Centralia goalkeeper Courtney Leifer-Carlson had nine saves.
“We kept trying to create opportunities, but the stats don’t lie, we had 1 shot on frame in the second half,” Centralia coach Henry Gallanger said. “We’re trying to create chances, but those chances didn’t come as much. We just couldn’t find players in dangerous areas or they overshot the ball.”
Centralia (6-2-1, 2-1 league) hosts Black Hills on Tuesday in an EvCo match.
Tenino Falls to Montesano
MONTESANO — Tenino had the lead early, but gave it up to Montesano and could never regain the advantage, falling 3-2 in an Evergreen 1A League girls soccer game here on Thursday.
Lannie Dowies scored for the Beavers in the 27th minute for a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Montesano came out strong in the second half and scored three goals to take the lead. Tenino’s Courtney Dodge scored in the 75th minute on an assist from Brieanna Dell, but the Beavers’ couldn’t score an equalizer.
“We played good, we tried a different formation to start playing a lot more defensively. They’ve got a great goalie and we weren’t getting a lot of opportunities,” Tenino coach Adam Barr said. “We changed it up in the second half to attack a little more. We had the ball in their end of the field, but we have a couple issues on defense we need to work on. It was the toughest game we’ve had so far this season. Monty has been on top for a long time, so a one goal loss isn’t devastating.”
Tenino (6-1, 1-1 league) hosts Elma on Tuesday in a league contest.
