2B Boys Basketball: Winlock Tops Rainier in Double OT

WINLOCK — The Cardinals and Mountaineers needed six quarters to decide a winner, with Winlock coming out victorious 65-55 double overtime win over Rainier in a Central 2B League basketball game here on Monday.

Wyatt Dean was a monster for the Cardinals, scoring 25 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. Nicholas Patching chipped in 18 points and Dawson Hall added 13 points and nine boards.

Shouridama Beadle led Rainier with 15 points, Devan Stancil contributed 13 points and Travis Honaker was the other Mountaineer in double figures with 11 points.

Winlock was up one late in the fourth quarter, and a foul sent Rainier to the line, making one of two free throws with four seconds left to tie the game. The Cardinals’ buzzer-beater attempt didn’t drop to send the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, Winlock was down 6 with a minute remaining before Patching hit a 3-pointer. After a Rainier free throw, Dean hit a deep 3-pointer to cut the lead to a point. Rainier hit another free throw to go up two with 11 seconds left, and Winlock drew up a play to get Dean the ball on the left block, where he hit a fadeaway jumper to force a second overtime.

The Cards took over in the second overtime, going on an 8-0 run to finally put the game away.

“We were a little bit thin on the bench. A couple guys fouled out,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said. “I told the guys how awesome it’s been to be in that experience. The crowd was outstanding.”

Bamer noted that Chase Miller gave the Cardinals great minutes off the bench, but the star of the night was Dean.

“He’s a kid that put in an incredible amount of time over the summer and he’s in the gym daily shooting. He deserves it, he really does,” Bamer said. “He missed a rebound in the first quarter, so I took him out and got into him. He ended up with seven rebounds in the first quarter. He was a man tonight, he carried us.

“That’s what we need from seniors,” Bamer added. “He’s peaking and we’re peaking at the right time. I wouldn’t want to play us if I were a few teams in the league.”

Winlock (6-9, 4-7 league) hosts Wahkiakum on Wednesday in C2BL game.
