Friday’s 2A Boys Wrestling: Bearcats Capture 7th-Straight League Title
By The Chronicle
TUMWATER — What was supposed to be a showdown between the two remaining undefeated titans in the 2A Evergreen Conference ended up being a one-sided affair.
The Bearcats blew up Tumwater 58-3 in a regular-season finale dual on the road Friday to capture their seventh straight EvCo title.
W.F. West (7-0, 5-0) ran their win streak to seven matches against an overmatched Tumwater (4-1, 4-1) squad. Does winning seven straight conference titles mean much to coach Jamie Rakevich?
“You really just want to win it for the seniors,” Rakevich said. “We’ve had seven groups of seniors who have been sent off the right way.”
The Bearcats won all but one match, Desmon Parriott’s 6-3 decision loss to Tumwater’s Gaven Murphy, but even that one was close.
W.F. West picked up five pins as a team and Rakevich said the team prides itself on being a dual powerhouse. He had praise for a few of his guys that had noteworthy performances Friday.
“Bryce Laufenberg wrestled great,” Rakevich said. “That was a big win over Reece Martin. It could have went either way.”
He also credited Isaac Reavis’ 7-4 decision victory over Tumwater’s Tyler Woods.
“Reavis pulled out a win over a tough kid who beat him earlier in the year,” Rakevich said. “We ended up having to bump guys to make sure we filled all the weight classes.”
Now, the Bearcats prepare to host the sub-regional tournament on Feb. 7 and 8.
