Wednesday’s 2A Boys Wrestling: Bearcats Nearing Undefeated Regular Season

W.F. West stayed unbeaten with a 58-15 dual win over Black Hills here Wednesday on Senior Night, moving one step closer to finishing out an undefeated regular season.

The Bearcats (6-0, 4-0) meets also unbeaten Tumwater (4-0, 4-0) in a showdown for the 2A Evergreen Conference title at 7 p.m. in Tumwater Friday.

But tonight, it was all Bearcats, as W.F. West won 10 of the 14 dual matches against the Wolves to easily sail to victory. Nine Bearcats seniors played in their final home dual.

“It was a good night. We got some seniors out there who haven’t gotten a whole lot of varsity time,” W.F. West coach Jamie Rakevich. “It was good to see them go out there and compete.”

Rakevich said his wrestlers competed well against Black Hills’ Cade Elliot and  Julian Kennedy.

“They’ve got a couple of real elite guys over there at Black Hills,” Rakevich said of Elliot and Kennedy.

Tigers Pick Up Win Over Bobcats

Centralia picked up eight wins en route to a 51-30 victory over Aberdeen here Wednesday in the Tigers final non-league dual of the season.

Juan Gaspar won Tiger of the Night after pinning Aberdeen’s Drew Lock, a state participant last season, in just 47 seconds in the 120-pound division. Gaspar is the fourth-ranked 120-pound wrestler in Class 2A.

“He looked very dominant and is on a roll right now,” Centralia coach Scott Phillips said. “We are very proud of how hard he works day in and day out.”

Centralia also got wins from Dominick Hicks-Avron (106), Eddie Matias (132), Alex Hicks-Avron (138), Justin Lake (145), T.J. Smith (152), Sawyer Kassell (160), Caleb Hylton (170) and Elliot Nye (182).

“Our experienced wrestlers looked really tough tonight, and our beginners battled but still looked like beginners,” Phillips said. “We are looking forward to how our guys compete in the postseason.”

Centralia (3-2, 3-2 EvCo) next wrestles at the Sub-Regional Tournament at W.F. West on Feb. 7.
