2B Football: Toledo Hammers Raymond to Qualify for State Playoffs

Toledo’s Davin Kinsman runs the ball during a District 4 crossover game against Raymond in Kelso on Thursday night.

KELSO — Three Indians ran for over 100 yards, and Toledo blew out Raymond, 47-9, here Thursday night to qualify for the State 2B football tournament.

Toledo, the No. 2 seed out of the SWW 2B League River Division, led 40-0 at halftime of the District 4 crossover game. The Indians won their fourth-straight game and will await word from the state seeding committee on Sunday as to their first-round playoff opponent.

“I think we’re as ready as we can be,” Toledo coach Mike Christensen said. “We’re on a little roll right now, and we’ve been playing our best football when it matters most. No matter who it is, we’re going to give it our best shot.”

Davin Kinsman carried the ball 10 times for 178 yards to lead the Indians’ ground attack. Quarterback Duke Schaplow ran eight times for 117 yards, with 1- and 66-yard touchdowns and an 86-yard kickoff return score.

Trey Rego added 100 yards on five carries with two touchdowns, including a 19-yard scoring run to start things off. He added a 2-yard touchdown later in the first frame.

Carlo Arceo-Hansen added a 4-yard touchdown run for Toledo, which piled up 474 rushing yards — which Christensen said was a credit both to the running backs and the blockers.

“It’s a combination,” he said. “Our running backs had great vision tonight. They ran really well, but our offensive line was able to open up some big holes for them.”

Raymond didn’t score until the second half, with a 35-yard field goal from Jose Delgado, and then a late 46-yard touchdown run from Joseph Villalpando.

The Indians (7-3) reached the State 2B semifinals last season, and enter the state playoffs for the sixth straight season. All three of their losses came at the hands of ranked 2B opponents (Napavine, Adna and Kalama).
