2B Football: Loggers Ride Haight to Win Over PWV

BELL COW: Ashton Haight’s 38 Carries for 270 Yards Pace Onalaska to 42-6 Win Against Titans

By Aaron VanTuyl / For The Chronicle

PE ELL — Onalaska took a shot to the jaw early on, fumbling away the opening kickoff and watching the host Titans march downfield to score the opening touchdown.

On their Friday night visit to dairy country, though, the Loggers went back to basics and kept dumping grain into their bell cow’s trough.

Fullback Ashton Haight packed the rock 38 times for 270 yards and a touchdown, and No. 1 Onalaska thumped No. 8 Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 42-6 in nonleague 2B football action.

“After that fumbled kick, when they scored the first touchdown, we just had to come back and give it to them,” Haight said.

On Friday, that entailed giving it to Haight — even the Loggers mixed up the play-calling in the first half a bit more than usual before leaning on their senior fullback.

“He wants it,” Logger coach Mazen Saade said of Haight, a four-year starter. “There was a point where we threw two passes in a row, and he looks at me and just says, ‘What are we doing?’”

By the Loggers’ second possession, those notions were cured. Haight carried the ball five times during a seven-play drive, breaking off a 34-yard run that helped set up Cade Lawrence’s 14-yard touchdown.

“I’m used to it by now,” Haight said of his heavy workload, “but I’m gonna feel it in the morning.”

The Titans then returned the fumbled-kickoff favor that started the game, and two plays later Haight had his touchdown on a 24-yard run up the left side. He also blocked a PWV punt two possessions later, setting the table for quarterback Lucas Kreger’s 58-yard touchdown scamper.

Kreger, also a senior, finished with 121 rushing yards on 10 carries, and went 1 of 5 passing. That one completion, though, was a 20-yard touchdown toss to a wide-open Lawrence that gave Onalaska a 28-6 lead going into the intermission.

“He looks great. Lucas did a good job,” Saade said. “Last week, he had a good week, but he had a lot of misreads, but tonight he ran the option really well.”

Kreger added a 47-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and the Logger defense held the reigning SWW 2B League Coastal Division champions in check. The Titans got 57 rushing yards from Max Smith on 19 carries, but ran for 65 yards in total and completed 4 of 13 passes for another 45 yards.

Their game-opening score came on a 17-yard pass from Logan Walker to Sam Western, who snared a pass over the middle near the goal line and fought his way through for the touchdown.

Wyatt Bush added two catches for 15 yards for PWV.

Gunnar Talley intercepted two Titan passes and Hazen Inman snared a third pick in the fourth quarter.

The Loggers finished with 470 rushing yards, and tacked added a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Inman in the game’s final seconds.

“We played tough, and, again, that’s a playoff-caliber team,” Saade said. “People question why we keep playing with three or four seconds left, well, that’s a playoff team, and that’s a playoff atmosphere.”

Lawrence added eight carries for 52 yards for Onalaska. The Loggers (4-0) enter SWW 2B League Mountain Division play on Friday with a home game against Morton-White Pass.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (2-2, 1-0 Coastal Division) plays at Chief Leschi on Friday.
