Monday’s Girls Soccer: Peters Keeps Scoring for Toledo in 4-1 Win Over Winlock
By The Chronicle
WINLOCK — Toledo’s Maryssa Peters continued her hat trick streak here on Monday, helping the Indians earn a 4-1 win against Winlock in a non-league girls soccer game.
Alyssa Gaskill scored in the 3rd minute on an assist by Teresa Cothren. Peters scored two goals in the first half, both with an assist from Rose Dillon, in the 16th and 20th minutes to take a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Peters completed the hat trick with another assist by Dillon in the 68th minute. Winlock ruined the clean sheet for Toledo in the 80th minute on a goal by Elizabeth Wolfe.
The Indians fired 25 shots and 14 were on target. Winlock had 10 shots, eight of which were on target. Toledo’s Kaylee Veigle made three saves and Daphnie Bybee stopped five shots.
“I think we did OK. I think the girls were just a little too excited about the outcome we had on Saturday,” Toledo coach Noel Vazquez said. “They were still a little bit on the cloud, started a little slow and were never consistent with our passing. Once they started to figure it out, we were able to control the pace of the game.”
Vazquez noted he brought his JV with him and was able to get most of the players subbed into the game, hoping to conserve some energy for his varsity players once league games start next Monday.
“Props for the younger side, the JV girls jumping in the second half,” Vazquez said. “It was a little bit unfortunate that we lost clean sheets three games in a row when we put in the JV but it’s the only way to get experience for them.”
He commended the play of Peters for providing some offense once again and noted her better shot selection this season as a factor for her fourth straight hat trick.
Toledo (4-1) travels to Ilwaco on Wednesday for a non-league game. Winlock (1-2-2) hosts Life Christian on Wednesday in a non-league match.

Life Christian made it a battle, with Elysse Loyola scoring a hat trick in the first half with goals in the 11th, 27th and 34th minutes to cut the Tigers’ lead to 5-3 at halftime.

McCarthy applauded the play of Jadynne League, filling in for Sydney Burdick after she tore her ACL in Saturday’s game against Toledo.

Note: Onalaska and Ocosta played to a scoreless draw on Monday in Onalaska.
