Saturday’s 2B Football: Toledo Scores Twice on Defense, Routs Morton-White Pass

Thundering Win: Indians Score All 41 Points in First Half After Lightning Delays Game

MORTON — The Indians and Timberwolves weren’t sure if they were going to play here on Saturday as lightning could be seen and heard as the clock hit the 7 p.m. game time.
The weather cleared and the game started an hour late and once the team’s hit the field, it was all Toledo, rolling to a 41-6 win in a non-divisional SWW 2B football game.
Toledo’s defense was the story of the night, holding the Timberwolves to minus-41 yards on the ground and a grand total of minus-3 yards of offense. Duke Schaplow intercepted a pass and returned it 28 yards to the house in the first quarter and Jacob Marley returned a fumble 13 yards for a score in the second quarter.
“I liked our effort and our energy. I could tell our guys were right where I wanted them to be, we’re tired of hitting each other and we just wanted to hit someone from another jersey and we did that tonight,” Toledo coach Mike Christensen. “We came out, there’s not a ton of varsity experience for our guys so we came out, we knew what we could do at practice and we’d seen glimpses of it but you never know until you see them play on a Friday night or Saturday night in this case and our guys really stepped up and played hard today so I’m proud of them.”
Morton-White Pass knew it might not be their night after the first play of the game, as the Timberwolves had a botched snap that was recovered by Toledo and turned into a Davin Kinsman short touchdown run less than a minute into the game. Kinsman converted a 5-yard touchdown run for the next score and finished the game with 46 yards on eight carries.
Following back-to-back defensive touchdowns by Toledo, Jesse Towns and Trey Rego each had 5-yard touchdown runs for a 41-0 lead at intermission and set up the second half for a running clock.
MWP avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Keegan Kelly threw a ball that was hauled in by Kysen Collette, running 23 yards for the score.
“Coach (Mike) Croy put together a really good plan for us and our guys executed it really well. We’ve been drilling this into our guys for it seems like all summer and I think as a football team, we’re a little further ahead than we’ve been in the past just because our guys have been in our system for three years now and we’re starting to see the fruits of that earlier in the season,” Christensen said. “Last year, we didn’t really start seeing those turnovers until late in the year. Hopefully, they keep coming and hopefully our guys realize that we’ve got a lot of work to do but it was a good night.”
Kelly was 4-of-16 passing for 38 yards with one interception and one touchdown. Layten Collette had one rush for five yards. The Timberwolves had two first downs, both from Toledo penalties.
“Our youth showed and my air raid guru is home with the flu so we didn’t have him here tonight. That would have helped a lot of the issues that came up during the game with protection and stuff like that,” MWP coach Lee Metcalf said. “We’ve just got to get better. We’re young so we’ll keep battling.”
Schaplow was 1-of-3 passing for 32 yards and one interception. Carlo Arceo-Hansen had one catch for 32 yards.
Toledo (1-0) will host Rainier on Friday while Morton-White Pass (0-1) will hit the road to face Raymond in a non-divisional matchup.
