MISSOULA, MONT. — I-5 Toyota/Mountain Dew won the early game but lost the nightcap in a senior legion baseball tournament doubleheader here on Thursday.

In Game 1, I-5 Toyota defeated the Central Washington Spuds, 11-6. Cole Wintrip started on the mound and was relieved by Luke Bennett in the fifth inning and Jackson Hull closed out the game in the seventh inning.

I-5 Toyota scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead. Max Taylor hit a 3-run triple in the sixth and the home team added two more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach and earn the win.

“I think we were kind of lethargic at the plate the first three or four innings,” I-5 Toyota coach Tommy Grunenfelder said. “We opened it up in the fifth and sixth, swung the bats as well as we have all summer.”

I-5 Toyota played well in the afternoon contest but fell to the Lewis & Clark Twins, 8-6. Camden Ryan started on the mound and threw five innings, allowing four walks while striking out three batters. Nolan Eyles pitched the final two innings.

Winters had two hits and an RBI and Brown chipped in two hits and three RBI. Brit Lusk also had two hits and Hull had a hit and an RBI.

I-5 Toyota scored one run in the first inning but Lewis & Clark tied the game with one run in the second and took the lead with three runs in the third inning. I-5 Toyota tied the game at 6-6 by scoring five runs in the fourth inning, but the Twins tallied two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

“We played really well in the second game. From the third inning in the first game all the way through, we played really well,” Grunenfelder said. “We had clutch hits but we came up a little short. I’m proud of the way the kids played today.”

I-5 Toyota takes on Walla Walla at Noon on Friday in Missoula. The game can be viewed online for free at www.mpsn406.com.
