Wednesday’s Boys Soccer: United Earns Clean Sheet Against Elma in District Semifinals

TENINO — United’s Gustavo Barragan recorded a hat trick to help lead Toledo/Winlock to a 5-0 win over Elma in a District 4 1A boys soccer tournament semifinal game here on Wednesday.
United has punched their ticket to the district title game on Saturday at 2 p.m., currently scheduled at Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver. The win also secures a state tournament berth for United.
“I don’t want to say we expect it, but we kind of expect it. We set our goals at the beginning of the season,” United coach Horst Malunat said. “When you decide you want to set a goal, you work hard and know what it takes to get there. We were building up for this, we lost the crown last year. We want that trophy back at the United fortress.”
Barragan initiated the scoring in the 10th minute on an assist by Isaac Cruz. Two minutes later, Andreas Malunat scored on an assist by Barragan. Malunat returned the favor in the 22nd minute, assisting Barragan’s second goal of the game for a 3-0 lead at halftime.
United wasted no time in the second half, as Malunat tallied his second of the game on a direct free kick beauty for a 4-0 lead. Barragan completed his hat trick in the 63rd minute on an assist by Brandon Cruz.
Alan Contreras made four saves for United in the clean sheet performance. United outshot Elma 23-4.
“I think we played really well. We moved the ball really well, started out strong, played a complete half,” coach Malunat said. “We got everybody in and rested some guys for the final.”
United fell to La Center 2-0 in last year’s district championship game. Forks defeated Seton Catholic 2-1 in Montesano on Wednesday.
Note: Centralia fell to Columbia River 4-1 on Tuesday in a District 4 2A boys soccer tournament semifinal game. The Tigers host Aberdeen on Thursday in a loser out game. W.F. West fell to Ridgefield 1-0 on Tuesday to end the Bearcat’s season.
