Wednesday’s Prep Baseball: Loggers Split Doubleheader With Coyotes
By The Chronicle
KITTITAS — Onalaska got some spring break baseball in here on Wednesday, splitting a non-league doubleheader with Kittitas.
The Loggers won Game 1, 12-11. Tristen Lawrence pitched five innings in relief of starter Tanner McLean. Matt Kurzeika came on in the seventh and finished the game.
At the plate, Carter Whitehead was 3-for-5 with three RBI and Cole Christensen was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Cody Cooper was 2-for-5 with a RBI for the Loggers.
Kittitas jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first and three runs in the second for a 7-0 lead. Onalaska slowly climbed back into the game, scoring at least one run in each of the last five innings, including four runs in the fifth and seventh. The Coyotes plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a comeback ended just short.
The conditions in Kittitas were not ideal for a baseball game, with Onalaska coach Rocky Stanley noting the wind playing a big factor in the games.
“The conditions, we played pretty well, but it was blowing so hard, my third baseman, and shortstop couldn’t throw to first base,” Stanley said. “It was windy. I’ve never seen nothing like it. Same thing in the outfield, every fly ball was just a circus.”
Kittitas was able to prevail in Game 2, 7-6. Matt Kurzeika started on the mound and pitched five innings, with Cooper coming in and pitching the sixth.
Whitehead was 2-for-4 and AJ Volk was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Christensen had another good game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Kittitas led 3-2 after one inning. The Loggers scored three runs in the fourth to build a 6-5 lead, but the Coyotes added a run in the fifth and sixth to secure the win.
Stanley noted the performances of Christensen and Whitehead in the doubleheader.
“We just played our normal game. It was just that dang wind, a routine fly ball for an infielder was quite a deal,” Stanley said. “It was a good non-league game, both of them. We got to play over the break. They’re a decent team, they hit the ball.”
Onalaska (6-3, 4-1) hosts Napavine on Tuesday for a Central 2B League doubleheader.
