Pirates Ward Off Napavine in Slugfest

ADNA — The Pirates held on down the stretch here Friday night, edging out Napavine 45-43 in a Central 2B League boys basketball contest.

Fittingly, on senior night, Austen Apperson figured heavily in the Pirates’ win. The senior scored a team-high 19 points and poured in 13 of those in the third quarter, helping Adna overcome a three-point halftime deficit and take a two-point lead into the final stanza.

“He just took over, offensively,” Adna coach Luke Salme said.

Lyle Metzenberg added eight points and 14 rebounds for the winners, who held a 31-20 advantage on the glass.

Cole Fay, Salme added, played well on Tiger leading scorer Dawson Stanley, who finished with 19 points. Cade Evander added 12 for Napavine.

“I know Dawson got 19, but he had to work for them all,” he said.

The Tigers had beaten Adna, 70-64, back on Jan. 7, but went with a man-to-man defense on Friday night and put in more work on the boards, Salme said.

“The biggest difference is we got outrebounded by 10 there, and this time we outrebounded them by 11,” he said. “That was the main point of emphasis coming into tonight.”
The Pirates celebrated senior night for upperclassmen Apperson, Metzenberg, Trevor Minkoff, Camden Ryan, Matthew Scheuber, and Brady Collins.

“What a great way for those guys to go out,” Salme added.

Adna (13-5, 6-2 league) will play at Kalama on Tuesday. Napavine (10-8, 5-3 league) hosts Winlock on Tuesday.
