Wednesday’s Boys Basketball: W.F. West Tops Modbury in Exhibition

By The Chronicle

W.F. West hosted Modbury, Australia in a boys basketball exhibition match in Chehalis on Wednesday, with the Bearcats prevailing 66-28.

W.F. West was led by Colton Baker with 15 points and Colby White added 10 points.

Modbury was led by the seven points of Guy Lineage.

The Bearcats went ahead early with a 16-9 lead after the first quarter. W.F. West poured it on in the second to lead 30-13 at halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half, with W.F. West outscoring Modbury 36-15.

The Bearcats shot 45 percent from the field while Modbury shot just 30 percent.

W.F. West (1-3) will hope to get their first win against an American team on Friday, hosting Columbia River in a non-league game.

Bulldogs Rip Rochester

ROCHESTER — A dreadful opening quarter doomed the Warriors here Wednesday night as they fell to Montesano by a score of 68-43 in non-league boys basketball action.

In that first frame the Bulldogs posted 19 points while Rochester managed just three points on one of 15 shooting.

“It’s hard to recover from one, not scoring very many points, and two just shooting so poorly,” said Rochester coach Mark Goldrick. “I don’t know what it would take to get you back in the right frame of mind after something like that. It was that bad.”

Rochester tried to rally back in the second quarter with a 22 spot but lagged behind again in the third frame when Montesano outpaced them 20-8. The Warriors managed to shoot just 24 percent while Montesano filled it up at a 44 percent clip. The free throw battle wasn’t any better as the Bulldogs drained 72 percent of their freebies and the Warriors connected on just 44 percent of their attempts.

Goldrick said that overall, though, he was not displeased with his team’s choice of shots. He just can’t figure out why they won’t fall.

“I think our shot selection was better. We maybe rushed a few but we’re not a big power team so when we’ve got looks they’ve got to go up,” Goldrick said. “They went up tonight but just not very many went in.”

Keegan Goldrick led the Warriors with a team-high 10 points and seven rebounds.

However, in a game with more than 75 misses the Warriors were only able to coralle 28 total rebounds.

“That’s something that we’re going to have to fight all season. I think we are going to be smaller than just about every team we play on our schedule,” said Coach Goldrick. “We’ve got to do a better job of getting in better position and blocking out our man for when the ball comes off the rim.”

Rochester (0-3) will play next Tuesday at home versus Elma.

Trojans Trip Against Life Christian

TACOMA — Pe Ell had a tough road trip on Wednesday as they dropped a non-league boys basketball game 76-42 to Life Christian.

The Eagles were hot from the start with 23 points in the first quarter and 61 points after three quarters while shooting nearly 55 percent from the field.

Meanwhile, Pe Ell managed just a 33 percent shooting percentage from the field and connected on just 10 of 24 free throw attempts. Jeremiah Yost led the Trojans with 10 points while Max Smith added seven and Wyatt Bush chipped in six points.

“Overall I thought we played hard. Dang, we just can’t find the hole!” lamented Pe Ell coach Chris Fitzgerald. “Tonight was a little bit better. We hung with them a little bit better in the first quarter but they just slowly started pulling away.”

Pe Ell (0-3) will play at Raymond on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
