Wednesday’s Girls Basketball: Olympic Holds Off Centralia

By The Chronicle

BREMERTON — Centralia had seven players get on the scoresheet but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell 59-40 in a non-league girls basketball game here on Wednesday.

Danika Jensen led the Tigers with 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. Kennedy Strophy had nine points and eight rebounds and Hannah Porter recorded five steals.

Olympic’s Jakyilah Willis and Morgan Kroesser each scored 12 points.

The Trojans jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter and led 28-18 at halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, with Olympic outscoring Centralia 31-22 to claim the win.

Olympic shot 44 percent from the field while Centralia shot just 31 percent.

“I loved our energy. We have some young kids that haven’t had varsity experience and we played hard,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “We had a lot of good shots but shots not falling. I love the effort by the whole team.”

Ashmore highlighted Jensen’s performance as a senior leader on the team and Porter handling the ball well under pressure from the Olympic defense.

Centralia (0-1) hosts Montesano on Friday in a non-league game.

Beavers Bite Eatonville

TENINO — A hot start helped the Beavers get past Eatonville by a score of 48-44 here on Wednesday in non-league girls basketball action.

Tenino put up a dozen points in the first quarter and 15 points in the second quarter while holding the Cruisers to just 14 first half points.

The Beavers’ Kaylee Schow led all scorers with 14 points and her sister Ashley Schow added 12 points. Abby Severse added seven points for Tenino while Alivia Hunter scored seven points and led the team in rebounds.

“I think they played hard from start to finish. There’s definitely no question about that but I don’t think we executed very well tonight,” said Tenino coach Brandi Thomas. “I’m just happy we were able to get the win.”

Tenino (1-0) will play at Rainier on Thursday in a non-league contest.

Onalaska Dismantles Three Rivers Christian

ONALASKA — The Lady Loggers shutout Three Rivers Christian in two of four quarters here on Wednesday on the way to a 60-4 win in a lopsided non-league girls basketball affair.

Onalaska jumped out to a 24-0 lead after one quarter and even called off their defensive press once they led by a dozen points. By halftime the Lady Loggers had pushed their lead to 43 points, but they did slip up and allow the Eagles to score two points.

“We played a lot of different defenses tonight. We got to play 2-3, man-to-man and some of our zone sets,” said Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy. “Our younger freshmen got to play a lot of minutes tonight and that was really good for them because we need the experience.”

Carmen Cleveland-Barrera led all scorers with 18 points. Alex Cleveland-Barrera added seven points and the sisters tied for a team-high five rebounds.

Freshman point guard Callie Lawrence added 14 points for the Lady Loggers while Adalee Sabin and Rileigh Holmes each had five points and five assists. Sabin added a team-high five steals to her tally.

The Loggers connected on only 3 of 13 three-point shots but hit fifty percent of their shots from the field in all thanks to some on-point passing. McCoy noted that her team dished 20 assists in the game as she challenged them to work on that specific skill in order to hold their focus during the blow out.

“We had really great ball movement,” said McCoy. “We really worked on our passing and ball movement in the offense which led to a lot of assists. That was our focus tonight.”

Onalaska (2-0) will play Toutle Lake at home next Wednesday.
