Wednesday’s Boys Basketball: Loggers Fall to Grizzlies in Opener

By The Chronicle

HOQUIAM — Carter Whitehead scored 32 points for the Loggers but it wasn’t enough as Hoquiam earned a 68-62 win in a non-league boys basketball game here on Wednesday.

Whitehead led all scorers and Ashton Haight added 10 points for Onalaska. Hoquiam’s Matt Brown had a team-high 24 points.

Onalaska jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and increased the lead to 39-27 at halftime. Hoquiam scored 19 points in the third quarter to tie the game.

Onalaska coach Wayne Nelson noted Hoquiam changed to a 2-3 zone in the third quarter and rebounded the ball better than the Loggers in the third to get back into the game.

Hoquiam scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to complete the win.

The Grizzlies dominated on the glass, 46-25.

“That was the name of the game, 21 offensive rebounds (for Hoquiam). We were tired lazy with our feet,” Nelson said. “For our first game, outside of the rebounding and some breakdowns on defense, we’ll learn from it and get better.”

Nelson was pleased with the performance of Whitehead in his first game in an Onalaska uniform.

“He’s a good player. He plays hard on D,” Nelson said.

Onalaska (0-1) hosts Ocosta on Saturday.

Ocosta Tops Pe Ell

WESTPORT — Pe Ell had three players score in double figures but came up just short in a 59-53 loss to Ocosta in a Pacific 2B League boys basketball game here on Wednesday.

Kollin Jurek had a team-high 12 points and Dana Isham scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for a double-double. Max Smith was the other Trojan in double figures with 10 points.

Ocosta’s Cole Hatton led all scorers with 18 points.

The Wildcats shot a tad better than the Trojans from the field but Pe Ell shot 50 percent from the free throw line while Ocosta shot 47 percent from the line.

Ocosta led 15-11 after one quarter and kept it going with a 31-26 lead at halftime. Each team scored 13 points in the third quarter and Ocosta edged Pe Ell by one point in the final quarter to seal the win.

“I thought for a first game. I thought we played really well at times and not so much at times,” Pe Ell coach Chris Fitzgerald said. “Shooting could have been better, we had a lot of good looks. I think we’ll be OK for a bit.”

Fitzgerald noted the performances of Smith and Isham in the first game of the season.

“We battled back the whole time with good effort,” Fitzgerald said.

Pe Ell (0-1) hosts Chief Leschi on Friday in a P2BL contest.
