Monday’s Prep Girls Basketball: Grizzlies Rip Lady Lady Loggers
By The Chronicle
HOQUIAM — A pair of former league rivals got back together on Monday night in order to tip off a new season of prep girls basketball as the Grizzlies toppled Onalaska 54-47 in non-league play.
Despite the opening night loss Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy was optimistic about the signs she saw from her team in their trip to Grays Harbor.
“We played very well for our first game,” said McCoy.
The Loggers started off slow but found themselves down just 24-16 to Hoquiam at halftime thanks to focused offensive possessions and steady effort on the defensive end.
“I think for a freshman Callie Lawrence had a great game and another freshman, Alex Cleveland-Barrera had 15 in her very first game out,” said McCoy.
McCoy noted that the team had only 10 turnovers for the entire game, “which is great for starting a freshman point guard.”
Carmen Cleveland-Barrera notched a double-double out of the post with 17 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for Onalaska.
However, a cold shooting night kept the Lady Loggers from coming home with their first victory in their first time out on the hardwood. They connected on just one of eight 3-point shots on the night and 15 of 48 shots in total. Moreover, Onalaska was able to hit only 14 of 32 free throws in the contest.
“We hit some free throws and we win the game,” said McCoy.
Adalee Sabin played a well-rounded game, contributing 10 points and six steals to the Onalaska charts. McCoy noted that Hailey Benton and Cierra Russ also contributed quality minutes.
The Lady Loggers coach has an idea of one area where her team can improve right away, though.
“I feel like we can get into a little bit better shape,” said McCoy.
Onalaska (0-1) will host Three Rivers Christian at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in a non-league game.
