Wednesday’s Prep Baseball: Elma Edges Napavine in Eight Innings
Elma Edges Napavine in Eight Innings
ELMA — Napavine bounced back from a tough loss on Tuesday and nearly knocked off 1A Elma here Wednesday before falling, 6-5, in eight innings of nonleague baseball action.
Elma’s Brody Rustemeyer doubled in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game, after pitching the first five innings and giving up six hits and two earned runs with a strikeout and a walk.
Laythan Demarest went 4 for 5 for the Tigers, while Garret Shannon and Levi Gates had two hits each.
“I was real happy with the way we came out and played,” Napavine coach Brian Demarest said. “After that loss last night (to Wahkiakum), this was just kind of what we needed. It was kind of what I needed to see, as a coach, for them to do.”
Ben Woodrum pitched the first two innings for Napavine, giving up two hits with one strikeout, no walks, and no earned runs.
“He threw really well,” Demarest said. “He pounded the zone and didn’t get into any trouble.”
Napavine (3-3, 2-1 Central 2B League) is scheduled to play at Kalama on Friday.
Comets Fly Past Winlock
WINLOCK — Naselle scored nine runs in the third inning and 11 runs in the fourth inning to defeat Winlock 21-3 in five innings in a nonleague baseball game here on Friday.
Winlock’s Anthony Clevenger hit a solo homerun in the first inning. Tyler Cook was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Nathan Suhrbier was 2 for 2 with two doubles and a run.
The Cardinals used five pitchers in the loss.
“I thought they played poorly. The first two innings were great, we tied it up right away. Cook threw a scoreless second, it was a 1-1 baseball game and I don’t know what happened,” Winlock coach Jordan Nailon said. “Someone wouldn’t stop putting quarters in the merry go round, we kept crying but we couldn’t get off.”
Winlock (0-4) hosts Adna on Friday in a Central 2B League game.
