2B Basketball: Arroyo Leads Toledo Past Napavine

Toledo’s Junior Arroyo lays the ball up against Napavine on Tuesday night in Toledo.

SLOW START: Arroyo Scores 26 Points as Indians Stay Perfect in C2BL With 65-57 Win

TOLEDO — Napavine’s game plan, from the outset, was to slow down Toledo’s high-scoring point guard.

As the Indians showed Tuesday night, though, there’s more to the only undefeated team in the Central 2B League than just Reece Wallace.

Junior Arroyo scored 26 points off the bench and Toledo stayed perfect in C2BL play with a 65-57 win over the Tigers here at George Murdock Gymnasium.

Napavine’s box-and-one defense — centered on Wallace — threw Toledo off a bit early on, and foul trouble in the first half meant a few changes in the lineup.

“Those guys came together, whatever combination was out there,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “And all of them kept finding Junior.”

Arroyo scored 10 points in the first half, and hit all eight of the Indians’ field goal for 16 points in the fourth quarter.

“I was really not caring about the points. I was thinking about that win, trying to keep our streak going, and playing as a team,” Arroyo said. “Points don’t matter to me, as long as we get that W.”

The 6-foot-6 Arroyo, Fallon said, has improved since last season, thanks to a summer with Roots Basketball and more confidence in his post moves.

“Now, if he doesn’t have it one one side, he’s long and he goes the underside, and he still rebounds,” Fallon said. “He’s obviously one of our key guys, especially when somebody’s in a box-and-one on Reece.”

That defense — with Dawson Stanley, Noah Lantz and Peyton Stanley playing the and-one role — limited Wallace to 7 points, and Napavine hit five of its first six attempts from behind the 3-point arc to lead 21-12 after a quarter. Wallace picked up his third foul with 23 seconds left in the first quarter and sat the entirety of the second frame.

“That doesn’t happen very often,” Fallon said. “He got in foul trouble, and if we can do what we did tonight — we kind of made a run.”

Fano Arceo-Hansen hit back-to-back 3s in the second quarter, and Arroyo scored 6 points in a 7-0 run to close the gap to 31-29 at halftime.

Toledo then went on a 9-0 run midway through the third frame, with a layup from Westin Wallace tying things at 35 and a 3 from Reece Wallace putting Toledo ahead in what proved to be the game’s final lead change.

Dawson Stanley scored back-to-back buckets in the fourth to bring Napavine within a point at 49-48, but Arroyo scored Toledo’s next 12 points — all from point-blank range — to help push the lead back to 59-50 with just under a minute to play.

“I think we stepped up pretty good,” Arroyo said. “The first quarter was pretty iffy, but we started making shots. We had to regroup and we played as a team, moved the ball around and started executing.”

Jordan Purvis led Napavine with 15 points. Dawson Stanley added 14, Peyton Stanley scored 12 and Lantz chipped in with 10. The Tigers, though, went 3 of 10 from behind the 3-point arc in the second half, after hitting 7 of 13 in the first half.

Arceo-Hansen finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for Toledo and played solid defense on Purvis, Fallon added. Toledo outrebounded Napavine 34-13, with Bryce Marcil adding five boards.

Toledo improved to 6-0 in league play and 9-1 overall with the win, a game ahead of Toutle Lake, Morton-White Pass and Adna, all at 5-1 in the C2BL. Napavine dropped to 4-2 (7-2 overall).

“When you only get to play those guys once, which — Napavine, Adna, (Morton-White Pass) — is three out of the next four games, you’ve got to get a couple of those games,” Fallon said. “You have to.”

Toledo plays at Adna on Thursday, while Napavine hosts Kalama (5-5, 3-3 league).
