Prep Girls Basketball: W.F. West Comeback Falls Short Against Camas

W.F. West trailed by 14 at halftime and battled back to take a lead in the second half, but couldn’t hang on as Camas earned a 57-51 win in a nonleague girls basketball game on Friday night in Chehalis.

Kiara Steen led the Bearcats with 14 points. Maggie Vadala added 10 points and Erika Brumfield led the team with nine rebounds.

The Bearcats shot 35 percent from the field and 26 percent from behind the arc.

“We couldn’t hit any shots in the first half,” W.F. West coach Tom Kelly said. “They were a big team, they were a good team. We weren’t hitting shots and relying on the outside shot too much.”

Camas led 16-11 after the first quarter. W.F. West managed just 4 points in the second quarter, allowing the Papermakers to build a 29-15 lead at halftime.

“I told them I had them press too much. Ten points on easy baskets like that in a tight game, it costs you. What a great comeback, though,” Kelly said. “We couldn’t quite close the deal. We dug too big a hole.”

W.F. West (4-1) is back on court on Tuesday at North Thurston (Lacey) in a nonleague game.
