2A/1A Girls Basketball: Elma Knocks Off Centralia

Centralia took a lead after a first quarter, but it was all Elma after that as the Eagles won 56-49 in a nonleague girls basketball game in Centralia on Tuesday.

Ellie Corwin led the Tigers with 22 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks. Rachel Wilkerson added 10 points for the Tigers.

The Tigers shot 51.2 percent from the field compared to Elma’s 39 percent shooting, but Centralia coach Doug Ashmore noted Elma’s offensive rebounding in the loss.

“We left a lot of their outside shooters wide open. (Kayli) Johnson, she couldn’t miss. We lost her in transition,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “Offensively, rebounding, they are a much bigger team than we are. They had a put-back every time. Some offensive rebounds is what really hurt us and not finding those shooters.”

Centralia built a 15-9 lead after the first quarter, but Elma answered in the second quarter and cut the Tiger lead to 29-28 at halftime. Elma outscored Centralia 14-10 in each the third and fourth quarter to earn the win.

Centralia (3-2) hosts Ridgefield on Thursday in a nonleague game.
Woodland Pulls Away to Beat Rochester

ROCHESTER — The Warriors got close in the third quarter, but an impressive stretch from Kaily Christensen helped Woodland pull away in a 49-29 nonleague girls basketball win here Tuesday.

Rochester had cut a 10-point halftime deficit to 4 points at the 6-minute mark, but Christensen — a sophomore guard — hit four straight 3-pointers over the next five minutes to help Woodland score 21 in the third frame.

“It just kind of got away,” Rochester coach A.J. Easley said. “She was 4 for 4 and never missed, all in that five-minute stretch.”

McKenna Flanagan also scored 12 for Woodland, while Lexi Jones-Sederberg led Rochester with 14 points and eight rebounds.

“She never came out of the ballgame, and she handled their pressure very well,” Easley said. “She did an outstanding job of breaking the press, attacking the basket and playing pretty good defense.”

Emily Elkins added 4 points and eight rebounds for Rochester. The Warriors (2-3) host R.A. Long on Thursday.
Schow Leads Tenino Past Seton Catholic

TENINO — Tenino’s Kaylee Schow put the team on her back here on Tuesday night, scoring 31 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the Beavers to a 50-26 win over Seton Catholic in a nonleague girls basketball game.

Rhian Mathis added 10 points and nine rebounds and Lannie Dowies grabbed 10 rebounds and scored six points.

“We had a lot more patience and energy once a couple things were clicking. The biggest thing for us was we played together so well this game,” Tenino coach Brandi Thomas said. “They did such a good job working together. Both on the bench and on the floor, tonight was it.”

Tenino turned an 8-2 lead after a quarter into a 32-8 advantage at halftime, and held on from there.

Tenino (2-3) travels to Eatonville on Thursday, playing at 5:15 p.m. as part of a girls-boys nonleague doubleheader.
