Prep Girls Basketball: W.F. West Blows Past 4A Skyview

W.F. West had five players score in double figures to lead the Bearcats to an 85-58 win over 4A Skyview in a nonleague girls basketball game on Thursday in Chehalis.

Maggie Vadala led the Bearcats with 18 points, going 4 of 6 from the 3-point line. Kiara Steen and Courtney Bennett each added 11 points and drained three 3-pointers.

Juila Johnson and Madi Haakenson each scored 10 points and Erika Brumfield led the team with 13 rebounds.

W.F. West crashed the boards, outrebounding Skyview 42-10. The Bearcats shot 49 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc.

It was a close game in the first quarter with the Bearcats leading 19-13 after one. W.F. West started to pull away in the second quarter and led 46-28 at halftime.

The second half was all Bearcats, as the hosts outscored the Storm 39-30 to cruise to victory.

W.F. West (3-0) hosts Mark Morris on Tuesday in a nonleague game.

Vashon Island Slips Past Tenino, 34-33

TENINO — Vashon Island converted a pair of foul shots with under a second on the clock to beat Tenino, 34-33, here Thursday in nonleague girls basketball action.

“We made some silly mistakes towards the end of the game, but it didn’t end on those mistakes; it was everything leading up to it, as well,” Tenino coach Brandi Thomas said. “It was a good learning experience, and I’m glad it happened in the preseason.”

Kaylee Schow led Tenino with 16 points, and Ryann Mathis added 9. The Beavers went 15 of 18 at the foul line.

Chloe Kuyper led Vashon Island, a member of the 1A Nisqually League, with 12 points.

Tenino (1-3) hosts Seton Catholic on Tuesday in another nonleague affair.
