TUMWATER — Centralia’s volleyball season came to an end here on Thursday, as the Tigers fell 3-0 to Columbia River in the District 4 2A volleyball tournament.
Columbia River won the first set 25-13, and took the second set 25-18. The Tigers battled in the third set and had a lead, but couldn’t hang on as Columbia River won 27-25.
“It was a bad night to have a bad night. The girls are disappointed because we’ve been playing so well the second half of season,” Centralia coach Neil Sharp said. “I’m really proud of the girls as we got progressively better as the night went on, we had a lead all the way up to the end, but couldn’t close it out in the third set.”
Danika Jensen served 15 of 15 and Joelle Mettler added 26 assists. Chelsea Petrino had seven kills and 11 digs and Rachel Wilkerson added 10 digs and seven kills. McKenna Smith had seven kills, Jessica Wu recorded four kills and Kylie Sharp tallied seven digs.
“I’m proud of what the girls achieved this year. We expected to perform better in playoffs, but we’ll look back and we have some stuff to be proud of. We had some great matches, some growth and friendships and lessons that will last longer than the volleyball season.”
The Tigers end the season 17-9 overall. It was the final game in the prep volleyball careers for Petrino, Wilkerson, Smith, Mettler and Wu.
“One of the things we talked about at the beginning of the season was there are a lot of different ways to be a leader. They led in a lot of different ways, they led because of the way they played, their work ethic. I’m really proud of them,” Sharp said. “I’m proud of what they accomplished this season and carrying the tradition of Tiger volleyball. I hope they had as good of a time as the coaching staff did.”
It was also the final game for Neil Sharp, coaching 11 years and recording a winning record and reaching the district tournament in all 11 seasons.
