Mossyrock Tops Kalama for District Championship Berth
By Matt Baide
RAYMOND — Mossyrock wasted no time against Kalama here on Wednesday, sweeping the Chinooks 3-0 in a District 4 2B Volleyball Tournament semifinal.
The Vikings will face Napavine for the district championship on Saturday at 3 p.m., back in Raymond.
The contest was a rematch of last year’s State 2B championship, which Kalama won in five sets. On Wednesday, though, Mossyrock beat the Chinooks for the second time in a week.
“Definitely our serve/receive and our defense is what powers us through. When we pass well, we can attack from all three spots, so we’re very effective when we can do that,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said. “When we struggled, it was because we didn’t do that.”
Stephanie Fried, in the back row, ripped off 10 straight serves in the third set to highlight the win.
“That was an impressive serving run for us. The serve was great but that comes from every player doing their job to have a run of 10,” Nelson said. “A great team effort there to be behind by 5 and go ahead by 5 in one rotation; I was really proud of their fight against a good team. That’s hard to do.”
Mossyrock (15-1) built a lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-15 win. The second set was closer, but the Vikings prevailed again, 25-21. The third set was dominated by Kalama to start with, but a run of 10 straight points with Stephanie Fried serving put the Vikings back on track as they won the third set 25-17 to sweep the match.
“We’re going to make mistakes and we’ve got to let that roll off. We’re hard on each other and we’ve got to be willing to hear that and battle back,” Nelson said. “I think we did a good job with that, having that ability to be tough on each other and have high expectations makes us the team that we are. Proud of the girls for having that mental toughness.”
Fried finished with 16 digs, seven kills and two aces. Andee Nelson led the team with 10 kills and Paige Moorcroft and Heather Edgar each added nine kills. Jamie Carlson led the team with 20 digs and Ava Nelson recorded 35 assists.
Napavine and Mossyrock have faced each other twice this season. The Tigers won the first match in a nonleague contest in Napavine, while the Vikings won the second match in a league play in Mossyrock.
“We do have a very strong senior leader group, I got a great libero that’s a senior, a great setter that’s a senior, a middle blocker, an outside. There’s something about having a senior in their last year and what they want to accomplish,” Nelson said.
