2A Football: T-Birds Trounce Tigers
By The Chronicle
TUMWATER — The Thunderbirds took a 42-0 lead into halftime here Friday night and then cruised the rest of the way to a 49-7 victory over Centralia in Evergreen 2A Conference football action.
Tumwater, ranked No. 4 in the state, totaled 356 yards of offense on their way to the convincing victory over the visiting Tigers. Centralia, meanwhile, was only able to muster 58 yards of total offense and one first down.
Tumwater was paced by Dylan Paine, who rushed 16 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Conner Clark added a rushing touchdown to the T-Bird tally as well as an interception returned for a touchdown.
Jose Pineda was the only Tiger to find the end zone on Friday when he scampered to paydirt in the fourth quarter. Pineda finished the game with a team-high 56 yards on 11 carries.
“We just played probably a team that’s going to play for it all. They are darn good,” said Centralia coach Jeremy Thibault. “It’s tough to asses a team that is coming up against a team that suited up 100 kids tonight.”
Acknowledging the quality of his team’s opponent for one night, Thibault was busy searching for positives in the aftermath of the game.
“We had a first down on our touchdown run at the end. They were a lot tougher than I thought. It’s tough to see on film,” said Thibault. “They are a very physical football team and we don’t answer well to physicality. I just challenged them to play harder and we came out in the second half and played well. It is what it is. They’re at where we look to be in three to four years.”
Centralia (1-4, 0-2 league) will host Rochester on Friday.
