Centralia players run sprints during the first day of practice in a field behind Tiger Stadium on Wednesday.

Washington’s high school football teams took the field for their first day of practice on Wednesday, marking the unofficial start to the countdown to the opening games of the 2017 season.

Centralia, and first-year coach Jeremy Thibault, will open the 2017 season with a rare Thursday night game on Aug. 31 in Longview, a nonleague contest against R.A. Long.

Most of Lewis County’s teams, though, will kick off for the first time on Friday, Sept. 1.

W.F. West hosts Hoquiam, Tenino hosts rival Rochester, Winlock hosts South Bend, defending State 2B champion Napavine plays at Raymond, Mossyrock hosts rival Morton-White Pass, Onalaska plays at Toutle Lake and Toledo hits the road to face 1A Charles Wright Academy.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley, meanwhile, will host Adna on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game in Menlo.
