Friday’s 2A Girls Tennis: W.F. West Tops Aberdeen

ABERDEEN — W.F. West had another solid day on the courts, defeating Aberdeen 5-1 in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis match here on Friday.

In singles, W.F. West’s Sidney Cameron came from behind in the first set and won the match, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

“Sidney had a lead, lost the lead, but came back in the tiebreaker,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “She played a little smarter second set. I thought she made some poor decisions on where to hit the ball.”

Bearcat Joelle Chung took down Katie Cournoyer without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0.

Aberdeen’s Dicky Cournoyer defeated W.F. West’s No. 3 Vanessa Sanchez, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Mya Davis and Megan Wilks cruised past Amanda Bradt and Adrianna Vazquez, 6-0, 6-2. Morgan Lakey and Lexi Akins defeated Aberdeen’s Alex Wilson and Hannah Erwin, 6-4, 6-4.

Kiara Steen and Ashley Werner completed the doubles sweep for the Bearcats, beating Rachel Tageant and Kylie Knodel, 6-0, 6-2.

“Kiara and Ashley have only lost one match this year. Both are first year players and they are doing really well,” State said.

W.F. West (6-3, 3-2 league) hosts rival Centralia on Monday in an EvCo matchup.
Tigers Slip Past Tumwater

Centralia swept the singles matches and picked up a 4-2 win over Tumwater in the Hub City Friday in an Evergreen 2A Conference girls tennis match.

Rachel Wilkerson, Claire Davis and Ruth Hopkins won, in order, in the three singles matches, none of which took more than two sets.

Maryanna Wu and Abbie Hopkins, meanwhile, won at No. 3 doubles by a 6-3, 6-4 score to give the Tigers the team win.

“Maryanna and Abbie came up to the net well,” Centralia coach Deb Keahey said, “and they had some nice down-the-line shots.”

Keahey also noted that Ellie Corwin and Megan LeDuc played well in a three-set loss in the No. 1 doubles match.

“It was a great doubles match — fast-paced and some great volleys at the net,” Keahey said. “We came up short today, but we’re looking forward to playing them again on Monday.”

Centralia (5-1, 4-0 league) plays at Black Hills on Saturday, plays at W.F. West on Monday and plays at Tumwater on Tuesday.
