CC Baseball: Blazers Swept by Tacoma in Weekend Series

Centralia College first baseman Taylor Mondina tags first base Saturday ahead of a Tacoma Community College runner in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader in Centralia. Tacoma beat Centralia 9-1.

Centralia played Tacoma down to the wire in three of four games over the weekend, but couldn’t quite get over the hump in back-to-back NWAC West Region baseball doubleheaders.

The Titans picked up 9-1 and 2-1 wins on Saturday at Ed Wheeler Field, then won 3-2 and 3-0 in a Sunday twinbill in Tacoma.

Centralia (3-24, 2-7 league) hosts Green River in a doubleheader on Saturday.

Tacoma’s Justin Simanek struck out eight and allowed three hits over six innings to get the win in Saturday’s opener. The Titans led 4-0 after two innings, and led 9-0 in the sixth before Dimitri Sakellariou drove in the Blazers’ lone run with a single.

Josh Muneno added a double for Centralia.

Saturday’s nightcap went into extra innings tied at 1-1 before the Titans pushed across a run in the top of the eighth with an RBI single from W.F. West product Elijah Johnson.

Mitch Johnson went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Centralia, and Trevor Zimmerman added a double.

John Sharkey started and pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Blazers, giving up five hits and one earned run with a strikeout and no walks.

Nate Packard struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings for Tacoma.

Garrett Westberg worked seven innings for Tacoma in Sunday’s opener, striking out seven without a walk and giving up one earned run, and Brandon Reynolds tossed two hitless frames to close out the game and earn the win.

Christian Lopez went 2 for 3 to lead Centralia at the plate, and Mitch Johnson had a hit and drove in a run.

Centralia scored both of its runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game, but Tacoma’s Alex McGarry hit a two-out RBI double in the eighth to score what turned out to be the winning run.

Tacoma pitcher Ryan Connor worked a complete-game shutout in Sunday’s nightcap, allowing three singles and striking out five without issuing a walk.

Muneno, Taylor Mondina and Brady Woodrum had hits for Centralia.
