Friday’s Prep Soccer: Rochester Earns League Win Over W.F. West
ROCHESTER — Rochester’s late goal in the 72nd minute was the difference as the Warriors defeated W.F. West 3-2 in an Evergreen 2A Conference boys soccer game here on Friday.
The Warriors scored first in the 5th minute, and added another goal in the 32nd minute for a 2-0 lead. Drew Mann got the Bearcats on the board in the 38th minute, converting a penalty kick to cut the W.F. West deficit to 2-1 at halftime.
W.F. West’s Christian Mathuzima, called up from JV, scored in the 60th minute to tie the game at two. The Warriors scored a late goal and held off W.F. West in the closing minutes to earn the victory.
W.F. West outshot Rochester 9-4, but couldn’t get those shots to find twine.
“We were on them. The luck went their way; I think we outplayed them. It was a tough one,” W.F. West coach Tino Sanchez said. “I’m really proud of the boys. We just couldn’t put it in the back of the net. It was frustrating for me as a coach. I didn’t counter as well as I normally do. The boys had their heads up; with time, we’re going to do well.”
W.F. West (1-5-2, 0-3 league) hosts Tumwater in an EvCo contest on Tuesday, while Rochester (3-6, 1-2 league) travels to face Black Hills on Tuesday in a conference contest in Tumwater.
