Wednesday’s Girls Golf: W.F. West Edges Rochester in Girls Golf Opener
By The Chronicle
W.F. West and Rochester finally started the girls golf season on Wednesday, as the Bearcats edged Rochester 58-30 in an Evergreen 2A Conference matchup at Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis.
W.F. West’s Carly Noble earned medalist honors, scoring 25 points in the modified stableford scoring system. Bearcat Kate Balmelli and Rochester’s Madi Ashton tied for second with 13 points each.
The Bearcats’ Haley Simmons and Whitnee Herr each recorded eight points. Abbey Link recorded four points and Payton Gift rounded out W.F. West with one point.
Rochester’s Allison Beagley scored seven points, and Nicole Fry and Shelby Baird each had four points. Elizabeth Miller scored two points and Alex Anderson didn’t score any points.
Both coaches acknowledged the playing conditions were difficult.
“I gave them a new ball that had a star and told them if you come back with that ball, I’ll give you another golf ball,” W.F. West coach Bruce Thompson said. “Nobody was bragging about coming back with the golf ball they started with.”
“The conditions were garbage, they can’t get mowers out there. If you missed a fairway, good luck,” Rochester coach Kyle Sprague said.
Thompson did highlight Noble’s performance, as she recorded a birdie on the par-4 8th hole. And Sprague noted he was pleased with Allison Beagley’s performance, saying if she continues to improve, she’ll be able to challenge for the top spot on varsity.
W.F. West (1-0, 1-0) will hope for better playing conditions after spring break, as the Bearcats host Black Hills at Newaukum Golf Course on Wednesday, April 12. Rochester (0-1, 0-1) hosts Aberdeen at Riverside next, also on April 12.
