YAKIMA – W.F. West had 12 steals and outlasted Archbishop Murphy 58-44 in a State 2A girls basketball tournament quarterfinal game at the Sundome on Thursday night.

Kiara Seen led the Bearcats with 14 points, while Erika Brumfield and Shasta Lofgren each added 12. Lexie Strasser recorded a team-high 10 rebound.

Archbishop Murphy got 19 points from Emily Rodabaugh with 19 points and Megan Dorney added 14.
The Bearcats face Lynden in the semifinals at 9 p.m. Friday night, with the other semifinal — featuring Burlington-Edison and Black Hills — starting at 7:15 p.m.

W.F. West took an early lead and led 17-11 after the first quarter. The Bearcats and Wildcats struggled offensively in the second quarter, but W.F. West still had a 26-19 lead at halftime.

“They’re a pretty good sized team,” W.F. West coach Tom Kelly said. “I thought our pressure bothered them. The first half, we kind of went to a sagging 2-3 (zone) and they hit a couple shots … and I get nervous.”

The Bearcats poured in 16 points in the third quarter, with Lofgren hitting two of her three 3-pointers, to build a 13-point lead and didn’t give the Wildcats any space to mount a comeback in the final frame.

Archbishop Murphy’s height — Dorney and Rodabaugh both stand 6-foot tall — gave the Bearcats some fits throughout the game, which kept W.F. West from pulling away early for an easy win. But W.F. West was able to overcome it with solid passing and easy baskets while only committing 13 turnovers.

“They’re a good team. They’re a big team. They’re no slouch,” Kelly said. “That’s a pretty good team, and that’s probably why we couldn’t pull away.”

The Bearcats shot 5 of 13 from behind the arc, compared to the Wildcats’ 2 of 10 shooting from long range, and held a 29-25 advantage on the glass.
