The Fishermen were just a little too much for the Pirates to handle down low.

For the second time in eight days Ilwaco beat Adna, this time in the third-place game of the District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament in Chehalis.

Eliza Bannister scored 15 points and Makenzie Kaech added 10 with 17 rebounds for the Pacific 2B League co-champion Fishermen.

The win means nothing for either team’s playoff fates; Adna is slated to face rival Napavine next weekend in a winner-to-state regional game.

Devanie Kleemeyer led Adna with 14 points, and Kenya Lorton added 11. The Pirates, however, shot a paltry 16 of 66 (24 percent) from the field.

The Fishermen went on an 8-0 run at the end of the second quarter to lead by a point at halftime, and worked in a 9-0 run at the end of the third quarter to pull ahead 37-30.

Kaech scored 6 in the last 2 1/2 of the game to keep the Fishermen ahead, and helped make a difference inside, according to Pirate coach Chris Bannish.

“When we lose in the trenches to a team like that, it’s because we’re not physical enough,” he pointed out. “It’s something that we know, because we talk about it, but it’s something we’ve got to do.”

Ilwaco held a 43-19 advantage on the boards, which helped offset 29 turnovers.

A 3-pointer from Lili Glover with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game cut Ilwaco’s lead to 3 points, but Kaech scored twice in a row and the Pirates went into a 4-minute draught to all but settle the outcome.

Adna (23-4) will now face Napavine in a loser-out regional game next weekend. The winner will advance to the play-in round of the State 2B tournament, which starts March 1 in Spokane.
