Wednesday’s College Basketball: Centralia Tops Tacoma

TACOMA — Centralia pushed its winning streak to five in a row, defeating Tacoma 58-47 in an NWAC West Division women’s basketball game here on Wednesday.
Centralia was led by Tamika Etherly with 18 points. Kylie Smith added 13 points and a team high 9 rebounds, and Brianna Zaragoza-Jones was the other Blazer in double figures with 11. Tacoma was led by Bobbi Westerndorf, who notched a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Tacoma took a 19-13 lead after the first quarter, and carried a 28-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. But the Blazers clamped down on defense in the second half, outscoring the Titans’ 33-19 in the half.
Centralia forced 24 turnovers which led to 21 points. The Blazers shot better from the field than Tacoma, and shot 79 percent from the free throw line compared to the Titan’s 50 percent from the stripe.
W.F. West product Payton Kelly scored 8 points for the Titans.
Centralia (16-8, 9-1 division) hits the road again on Saturday to face South Puget Sound at 1 p.m. in another West Division matchup in Olympia.

Men’s Basketball
Titans Trounce Blazers
TACOMA — Centralia’s Austin Curry scored 30 points, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Tacoma, as the Titans earned a 83-67 win in an NWAC West Division basketball game here on Wednesday.
Curry added a team high 7 rebounds, and Donald Dorsey added 11 points for the Blazers. Tacoma was led by Kahliel Wyatt with 24 points. Khalil Thompson added 15 points and William Moore chipped in 12 points for the Titans.
Centralia had less turnovers than Tacoma, but lost the rebounding battle, 43-36. Tacoma also shot 46 percent from the field, including making 10 shots from behind the arc, while Centralia shot just 40 percent and only made three 3-pointers. Tacoma also had 36 points off the bench compared to Centralia’s 17 bench points.
Centralia (4-20, 1-9 division) will head north on I-5 on Saturday to face South Puget Sound CC at 3 p.m. in Olympia.
